In this “Deep Dives,” our new online series exploring the rich history of legendary exhibitions at the New Museum, Carlos Basualdo, Keith L. and Katherine Sachs Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, speaks to New Museum's Kraus Family Curator, Gary Carrion-Murayari about the exhibition, "Hélio Oiticica: Quasi-cinemas (including works in collaboration with Neville D'Almeida)," which was on view at the New Museum from July 26 - October 13, 2002.

Basualdo curated the exhibition for the Wexner Center for the Arts, Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. The exhibition was the first major museum exhibition in New York devoted to the late, Brazilian artist, Helio Oiticica and focused on his Quasi-cinema works which blended experimental film and popular culture in disorienting, participatory installations.
