The title of the 2021 New Museum Triennial, “Soft Water Hard Stone,” is based on a proverb first introduced to the curators by Brazilian artist Gabriela Mureb, which states: Água mole em pedra dura, tanto bate até que fura (Soft water on hard stone hits until it bores a hole). This panel, featuring Triennial artists Mureb and Laurie Kang, catalogue contributor and curator Raphael Fonseca, and moderator Bernardo Mosqueira, ISLAA Curatorial Fellow at the New Museum, considers the proverb and how it relates to each participant’s practice and the Triennial at large.
